OUR STORY

“Celebrating 69 Years of Service “

   (1955 – 2024)

God sat among His people on the Mountain of Sinai, where He established the laws that would govern them. God called Moses to Mount Sinai and gave him those laws to teach His people. Jesus Christ came, and he brought life into the law. Christ commissioned men to teach the law of life and love throughout the world.

On August 17, 1955, the #2 New Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church was organized under the leadership of Rev. Elijah Sercye, along with 18 members. Ministers who participated in the organization were Rev. J. V. Richardson, Rev. R. H. Jones, Rev. T. R. Hendon, Rev. G. Whitfield, Rev. F. S. Satisfield, Rev. J. Q. Harris, and Rev. Elijah Sercye, who was elected Pastor.

God led #2 New Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church to begin its journey at 3642 West Roosevelt Road, Chicago, Illinois. Our faithfulness to God’s mandate was rewarded on Sunday, January 26, 1969, as we were blessed to move to our current church home at 310 North Laramie Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60644.

Under the steadfast leadership of Pastor Elijah Sercye, #2 New Mt. Sinai experienced remarkable growth in all aspects. His faithful service until his passing on November 28, 1983, left a lasting legacy that we continue to honor and appreciate.

On December 18, 1983, the pastoral call was extended to Rev. Willie L. Sercye. Under Pastor Willie Sercye, #2 New Mt. Sinai continued to grow in all ways, a testament to our resilience and faith. Rev. Willie Sercye labored faithfully until his death on May 4, 1988, leaving a legacy of growth and dedication that we continue to uphold.

On August 31, 1988, the #2 New Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church extended the pastoral call to Rev. David Spencer. Sr. Pastor Spencer accepted the call and served faithfully, preaching, teaching, and leading as the Lord guided him until his resignation in January 1998.

On March 4, 2000, the #2 New Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church “extended the call to Rev. Woodard Williams.” Pastor Williams accepted the call and served for 24 years, developing over 20 ministries until he retired on April 30, 2024.

On June 30, 2024, the #2 New Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church “extended the call to serve as pastor to Rev. Terry Moore.” Pastor Moore accepted the call and believe that we are called to live a life worthy of the Lord and to please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work and growing in the knowledge of God. Colossians 1:10

The #2 New Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church has been tremendously blessed by the Lord during these 69 years of service. We have maintained a tradition of Christian fellowship supported by prayer and biblical preaching and teaching. We are anchored by a tried-and-true faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.

As the #2 New Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church celebrates 69 years, by the grace of God, we will continue to develop and give purpose to the ministries that God has blessed us with. We will continue to work towards our church mission. Follow the Great Commission of Christ. Our vision as a church is to cultivate a body of believers who live their lives worthy of the Lord, actively engaging in good works that reflect our faith and commitment to Christ, sharing the teachings of Jesus Christ, and building the kingdom of God by engaging with the community around us. As a church family working together for over half a century, we join with the saints and all those who love the Lord in saying, “Amen: blessings, glory, thanksgiving, honor, power, and might be unto our God forever and ever Amen.”

Our Pastors.

We honor and remember the faithful leaders who have shepherded our church through the years, including the visionary who founded our congregation. Each of our past pastors has played a vital role in guiding and nurturing our church, and their legacy continues to inspire and strengthen us today. Take a moment to reflect on the devoted service and leadership that have shaped the spiritual foundation of our community.

ILLINOIS BAPTIST DISTRICT ASSOCIATION

The #2 New Mount Sinai Baptist Church is a member church of the Illinois Baptist District Association, a partnership of several churches in Chicago, working together to advance the gospel throughout the Chicagoland area and the state of Illinois. For over 70 years, the IBDA has been a family journeying through the joys and challenges of church life. As the district works together to experience health and growth, our churches also unite to spread the gospel and multiply churches into the vast lostness of our city.
